About the book >.>.> SIR WINSTON CHURCHILL speaking in the House of Commons on August 2nd 1944 described Orde Wingate as “a man of genius who might well have become also a man of destiny.” Four months earlier a tragic air accident had robbed the Chindits of their leader at the summit of his achievement. In this biography Christopher Sykes tells the story of one of the most thrilling figures of the war. An individualist through and through no soldier could have been less conventional than Wingate. After all few junior officers interrupt the C.I.G.S. on an exercise to complain about being refused a vacancy at the Staff College. In Palestine where he first showed his military genius in the organisation of special patrols against Arab terrorists Wingate was exceptional in his support for the Jews and his passionate devotion to the cause of Zionism. In Ethiopia where he was com- mander of the troops in the immediate service of Haile Selassie his brilliant cam- paign of courage and bluff played a notable part in the Italian defeat and the restoration of the Emperor to his throne.
