About the book >.>.> Much of this introduction was written at home during the evening yet despite the considerable enjoyment the authors received from writing this book the activity could hardly be called leisure. At the same time as our ‘amateur’ hands were striking the typewriter keys hundreds of thousands of people around the country were indulging in ‘leisure’ activity putting in at least as much hard ‘work’ as we are doing and probably much of it in a far more ‘professional’ and no doubt skilled manner. It is partly because of such contradictions that leisure remains such an elusive and diverse territory – we all know of people who put far more effort and care into their leisure activities than into ‘paid work’! The concern of this book is with activity which is freely given yet typically assumes the form of highly skilled and imaginative work whilst remaining leisure and not employment. We wish to look at the self-confessed amateurs who go about their activity in a highly professional manner and yet for whom the ‘social aspects’ of their pursuit are indispensable. Our focus therefore is the world of the enthusiast particularly those who indulge their passions collectively by participating in groups. Our own research suggests that such activity far exceeds all other forms of self-organized activity whether in housing health or whatever. (LL)
