About the book >.>.> Though far from what became known as the ‘front line’ in the south of the country the Oxfordshire airfields played a dramatic part during the Second World War in the victory over a ruthless enemy. Oxfordshire’s contribution to the war effort mainly lay in the many training airfields that abounded in the county and the many troops who flew from them during the great assaults upon mainland Europe. It was for the training of bomber crews and glider pilots that most of the airfields will be remembered. That is not to say that the personnel on the airfields did not see war at first hand. Several of the sites were to receive attacks from the Luftwaffe causing both death and destruction. The repairing of damaged fighter aircraft was also important in the county an essential task enabling the fighters to return to operations as quickly as possible. Many of the airfields are now just memories but the military still has a presence in the county with Benson Brize Norton and (for parachute training only) Weston-on-the-Green remaining operational to carry on the great tradition.
