About the book >.>.> THROUGHOUT THE PACIFIC WAR THE U.S. MARINE CORPS’ STRENGTH IN THE war zone was always vastly exceeded by that of the U.S. Army. During the Pacific War U.S. Marines undertook twelve storm landings (at least one regiment assault- ing a beach amphibiously) but the Army undertook at least a dozen storm landings in the Philippines alone in 1944 and 1945. The Marine Corps aviation arm fielded up to four divi- sion-level wing headquarters in the Pacific during the war but the U.S. Army Air Forces establishment in the Pacific alone dwarfed that of the Marines on any given day and the U.S. Navy almost always controlled more aircraft over Pacific waters than the Marines. For all that the Marine Corps was invariably smaller than the raw-strength establish- ments of the Army and Navy and for all that it took part in fewer operations than either of its sister services Marines are the first troops two generations of Americans think of first when the words “Pacific War” are mentioned. How can this be? How did the Marine Corps effort in the Pacific War become so anchored in the American psyche as to become synonymous with it?
