About the book >.>.> From 1939 to 1945 the armored divisions of the German land army (Heer) made up a formidable instrument of war. This instrument began to be built up in the immediate aftermath of the 1914-18 war and it was thanks to the tenacity and inventiveness of a group of officers including future generals like Lutz and Guderian that on rising to power in 1933 Hitler found ready the neces- sary basis on which to build up a tank force worthy of the name. Thus from 1935 to 1945 over thirty armored divisions came into being. Being endowed with quality staffing and high-perfor- mance equipment employed following revolutionary principles they played a decisive role in the series of victories in Poland and France in the Balkans in north Africa and the Soviet Union. When from the summer of 1943 they went on the defensive they continued to contribute towards slo- wing down Allied troops as they advanced inexorably into the heart of the Reich. Throughout the war although they had their ups and downs they managed to inspire admiration and envy attai- ning a legendary status that lingers on to this day… This book is devoted to the panzer or armored troops (Panzertruppen) of the Heer and more espe- cially to the armored divisions (Panzerdivisionen). It contains the biographies and portraits of the 266 general or superior officers who commanded armies army corps and armored divisions during the period 1935-1945. This little-known and yet crucial aspect is presented here for the first time in French and English. Part Two describes the makeup and history of the armies army corps and armored and light divisions (these last were part of the Panzertruppen) set up between 1935 and 1945. This section is illustrated with some sixty reportages totalling over 300 mostly unpublished photographs involving the different tank divisions on all fronts and at all stages of the war. (MP)
