About the book >.>.> Arts Gallery closed many people still think of it with affection as the place where Helen Lessore battled to maintain the suprisingly high quality of her exhibitions the greater number being of work by young artists. Both those who remember the gallery and those who only know of it by repute will welcome this book for although it is not a collection of memoirs or anecdotes nevertheless the fact that the author was so closely involved with many of the artists discussed here gives a warmth to her writing and the authentic ring of an eye-witness’s account. The artists became her friends and naturally they occasionally spoke to her of their aims; but she never questioned them on the subject believing that work must always be judged on achievement not intentions. She also believes that one should not write about artists at all unless one admires them and even then as fearlessly as if they were dead. As may be expected therefore these essays are sympathetic and illuminating studies tracing the development of the artists chosen from their early work until they became famous and especially remarkable for setting them in the wide context of the great European Tradition for which the writer cares so passionately.
