City culture has become the dominant one and people are never comfortable unless they are in a crowd. Solitude and silence are both a threat and a reproach. The problems of today war poverty famine and environmental pollution press us urgently towards the creation of a more just and stable society and a sustainable universe. The religious task today is seen as the creation of community in the hope that we may learn to live together in peace in our overpopulated world. There are many people who live in a solitary way through circumstance occupation sickness or old age. Their soli- tude is not necessarily a welcome experience; it can be felt as loneliness or isolation from human contacts. For such people solitude is an experience of bitterness underlined by modern sociological theory which like the current fash- ion in spirituality works with a model of togetherness. The spirituality of fifty years ago with its medieval emphasis upon the saving of one’s own soul has been replaced by one where the important thing is to save everyone else from their own misfortune from poverty from maladjust- ment. The solitary person according to this model is one who is alienated from the values of society. The medical model of isolation generally accepted leads us to suppose that that which is cut off is deviant an aberration. Those who are solitary are sick deprived and unfortunate. (LL)
