About the book >.>.> His versatility in the graphic arts is shown by his early application to etching and engraving his skilful exploitation of the new art of aquatint his productions in oil and tempera and especially by his prolific output and mastery of the various modes of painting in water- colour from the stained drawings of his early career to the pure water-colour and body- colour paintings of his riper years. Until Paul Sandby’s time most of the exponents of the graphic arts practising in this country were of foreign extraction. Sandby led the way in demonstrating that beautiful landscape scenes were not confined to compositions based on the Italian Campagna for by his views of castles abbeys and other remains of antiquity and by scenes of mountainous and pastoral landscape in England. Scotland Wales and Ireland he opened the eyes of his countrymen to the beauties of their native land. The wheel of history and his own genius made Paul Sandby the principal English exponent of the powers of the water-colour art for fifty years from the time it began to be recognised as an art in its own right just as oil painting had been for centuries. This fact fully entitles him to be regarded as the “Father of English Water-Colour. Indeed of the thirtysix Foundation Members of the Royal Academy chosen in 1768 Paul Sandby seems to be the only one chosen principally for his powers in the water-colour art.
