About the book >.>.> This volume is the ultimate outcome of a colloquium held at Newbold College in September 1999 and supported by the British Academy on religious minorities and the enforcement of conformity in Europe since the Reformation. Lasting four days and attended by over eighty delegates from eighteen countries it was held to mark an anniversary: the 125th anniversary of the Seventh-day Adventist church in Britain and Europe; but it was not simply to commemorate a century and a quarter of one Protestant denomination’s existence in Europe. Rather the anniversary was the occasion to consider a significant problem: the extent to which different churches even different faiths can exist (and co-exist) in a pluralist secular society. Two volumes of essays have emerged from that conference but neither are proceedings volumes. In each volume essays especially commissioned in order to ensure fuller treatment of the subject matter supplement papers delivered at the conference the authors of which have in the interim made (often considerable) changes and additions in the light of the original vigorous discussions of further research and in some cases of peer review. The problem this volume considers has only become of greater importance since the conference. It is of great historical interest but it is also of vital importance today. The challenges of multi-culturalism and increasingly diverse religious beliefs seem to threaten to fragment the unity of Western society.
