I realised that I was one of the luckiest men in the Church of England. It is indeed a privilege to be associated closely with the construction and preparation for use of a new Cathedral. Within a few days I had the privilege of meeting Professor Basil Spence and found that here was a man inspired-a man with an ardent glowing faith in God-who believed in his vocation to build a Cathedral expressive of the Christian Faith in contemporary terms. Some may think that Basil Spence is a revolutionary. In certain respects he is but it is even more true to say that he is an evolutionary -one who builds solidly upon past foundations who seeks to integrate his modern ideas into the experience of past traditions. He builds on the past learns from the past seeks to mould the past into a creative and courageous present. As he shows in his book he had the conception of a Cathedral built around the High Altar.
