About the book >.>.> Indeed the joy of integrating physical ideas around a single topic is something we have tried to transmit through the story of stellar evolution and cosmology. We have not however attempted to compile an encyclope- dia of astronomical information. Our goal is for the general reader to develop intuition for the organization logic and beauty of a modern science. We have therefore written this intermediate text for a diverse audience: the undergraduate liberal arts or engineering student who has been bitten by the physics bug and who would like to explore the relation- ship between physics and astronomy; the graduate science student who wants to obtain a solid foundation for future astrophysical studies; the amateur astronomer who would like to understand more about what he sees; and finally for all of us who love a good detective story with a great plot-the birth evolution and death of stars and the universe. This book is organized in the following manner. With no fanfare chapter 1 plunges into a series of topics designed to give the reader a better grasp of the techniques and tools of astrophysics. The topics include the ideal gas law the meaning of temperature black body radiation as well as a review of discrete spectra and the Doppler effect.
