About the book >.>.> In the spring of 1637 Pietro Berretini da Cortona began frescoing the walls of the Sala della Stufa in the grand-ducal apart- ments of the Pitti Palace in Florence. Al- though it was his first Medici commission Cortona was already an artist of standing in Rome. His decorations for the Sala della Stufa and then for the five rooms each de- voted to a planetary deity-Venus Apollo Mars Jupiter Saturn-became the admira- tion of his contemporaries and have con- tinued to delight spectators with their tech- nical virtuosity and splendor. Malcolm Campbell’s is the first mono- graph to focus on these fresco and stucco decorations and on Cortona’s role in the larger scheme of renovation projected for the palace. Consulting a wide variety of pri- mary sources he has determined the original functions and appearance of the Planetary Rooms and provides a detailed chronology of their decoration. Style iconography vis- ual sources and influence are discussed as well as the part played by Cortona’s chief assistant Ciro Ferri. Included are 126 docu- ments taken from collections in Florence. Modena and Rome and a catalogue rai- sonn? of 160 related drawings. Over 200 illustrations supplement the text. Malcolm Campbell is Associate Professor and Chairman of the Department of Art History University of Pennsylvania. Princeton Monographs in Art and Archae- ology XLI (MP)
