Their first meeting was brought about by the poet Paul Eluard: it was the beginning of a long friendship which lasted even beyond Picasso’s death notably through the books catalogues raisonn?s and other studies that Daix devoted to his friend-many precious exceptional tales. Such as for instance a visit to Auschwitz in 1948 where Picasso deeply moved exclaimed: “And to think that artists have thought for so long that they could depict the Massacre of the Innocents!”. MAGE An exceptional connoisseur of Picasso and his work Pierre Daix was also a keen authority on all types of creation in all media. He spoke of art as an adventure with an unwavering passion. I remember his sharp gaze: the gaze of an innovator even during his final visit of the Mus?e Picasso a few days before his death. To honor his memory I have decided together with his wife Fran?oise to create a Pierre Daix Prize which will be rewarded each year to the best book on modern or contemporary art history (SP)
