About the book >.>.> The Sh?b?genzo Zuimonki consists largely of brief talks hortatory remarks and instructional and cautionary commen’s by the Japanese Zen Master D?gen (1200-1253). These were recorded by his disciple Ejo (1198-1280) and later edited by the latter’s disciples after his death. The Shob?genzo Zuimonki according to the colophon of the popular edition of the Tokugawa period was compiled during the years 1235-1237 apparently a short time after D?gen had established his temple the Koshoji at Uji south of Kyoto. It remained in manuscript form for over four hundred years and was first printed in a very small edition in 1651. Later a revised version by Menzan Zuiho (1683-1769) who worked on the text intermittently over a fifty-year period was published in 1769 although its preface dates to 1758. This edition has become the so-called rufubon the popular text which is accepted as the standard version of the Shob?genzo Zuimonki In 1941 a manuscript copy made in 1644 of an original manuscript of 1380 was discovered at the Choonji. in Aichi Prefecture. This version which contains many textual problems differs considerably from the popular edition in the arrangement of the text in the items contained and in the wording: and it may well be much closer in form to the original text.
