About the book >.>.> The collection of data is made even more difficult by the fact that while a great deal of attention was paid to the photography of locomotives and to a lesser degree coaching stock the so-called humble wagon never received the attention it deserved. Having collected sufficient data to make this book worthwhile I was faced with the problems of classification. One could have provided a number of small volumes covering different areas but this is not practical as the records for companies building in certain areas e.g. Thos. Hunter of Rugby or Thos. Moy of Peterborough are no longer available. A second method of classification could have been by date period e.g. pre-1907 1907-1923 1923 onwards. Although this would be more practical its major disadvantage is that it could not show the development of the P.O. wagon and its livery in one volume. The method of presentation I have finally chosen therefore is to show a representative selection of wagons from different parts of the country over differing time periods. In this way I have been able to illustrate in several cases at least how a company changed the design and livery of their wagons. Having settled on a method of presentation the most difficult task began; which of the plates to leave out. I can only hope that readers will enjoy the selection I finally chose as much as I enjoyed putting it together. (LL)
