About the book >.>.> The place where this building stands was once occupied by fine gardens belonging to the Emperor Geta of tragic memory. He was co-heir with his brother Caracalla to the empire of the C?sars. But the Roman empire was not in those days a thing to be owned in common. The association was broken by a fratricide of which perhaps these very gardens were the scene. Before the time of Geta ancient buildings occupied this space. After the events of 1870 the Italian Government having taken possession of Rome resolved to build wharves along the Tiber; the superb avenue of holm-oaks in the gardens of the Villa Farnesina bordering the river was then destroyed. Ancient walls hidden for many centuries were brought to light adorned with delicate stuccoes and exquisite paintings. By the side of this Gr?co-Roman decoration so dainty and elegant the Pompeian house ornamentation seems mere apprentice work. These antique remains now form the most precious treasure of the Trastevere Museum. May the air and light not prove more (MP)
