About the book >.>.> GIOVANNI BATTISTA TIEPOLO (1696-1770) was one of the most cele-brated artists of the eighteenth century. He was active not only in his native Venice but throughout Europe carrying out im-portant commissions for prestigious patrons. The great fresco cycles of his mature years in Northern Italy W?rzburg and Madrid together with his numerous paintings on canvas hundreds of extant drawings and thirty-five etchings constitute a prodigious oeuvre. His talented son Giovanni Dome-nico (1727-1804) early became his most valued assistant and worked closely with him. Rare Etchings by G. B. and G. D. Tiepolo is published in conjunction with an exhibi-tion of these rare etchings at the National Gallery of Art in Washington. Eighty-five of the prints shown are from two albums which once belonged to A. M. Zanetti the Elder (1680-1767) a noted collector-connoisseur and friend of the Tiepolos. These were given to the National Gallery by Lessing J. Rosenwald and are published here for the first time. They are of particu-lar interest because a number of them are working proofs and all are of superb quality. Among Giambattista’s prints are impressions with hand-inked corrections made by him. Several of these are repro-duced here in three colors side by side with untouched impressions giving insight into the way he worked and the effect he de-sired. (MP)
