About the book >.>.> A striking structure currently sits in the Art Gallery of Ontario’s Galleria Italia-a tent made entirely of hand-carved marble with folds of fabric that look astonishingly supple. This work by Rebecca Belmore Biinjiya’?ing Onji (From Inside) was first presented in Athens in 2017 on a hill with a view of the Parthenon. Addressing the historic mass migration of displaced peoples taking place around the world this marble tent exemplifies Belmore’s powerful site-specific practice. The Art Gallery of Ontario is privileged to present Facing the Monumental a major exhibition of Belmore’s sculpture installation and performance work. It is a testament to her skill and sensitivity as an artist that her works elicit intimate moments of reflection and recognition in addition to tackling tremendous contemporary issues. Over her thirty-year career Rebecca Belmore has proven to be one of the most important artists working today and in 2016 she was awarded the prestigious Gershon Iskowitz Prize culminating in this exhibition.
