About the book >.>.> It will be seen that his general impression is that the town had on the whole improved and he notes it in his own respectably regretful kind of way. His upright Victorian shame (for he was a professional man) at the drunkenness cudgelfighting and squalid disorder is still tinged with some nostalgia. He righteously condemns for example the riotous behaviour but mentions sadly “that beer was beer in those days not the stuff we are obliged to drink by that name now”. His conviction that there had been a vigorous past is however tempered by his realistic view of the sheer nastiness of provincial Georgian England: after giving a mercifully short account of the privies public and otherwise he reflects “Men and women were certainly stronger sixty years ago than they are now… if not how could they have stood the amount of depletion resorted to in those days?”. And it must be said that his lifelong occupation as a dispensing chemist gives a certain grim weight to that comment.
