About the book >.>.> Sandra Stabler spent her early childhood in Crossways she has distinct and colourful recollections of the airfield being commissioned and of the Empire Air Day displays. “One of my earliest memories of the presence of the RAF in our village is of standing just outside my parents’ shop – now known as Tree Stores in Warmwell Road but at that time just called “Stabler’s” or “the Post Office” – waiting for the arrival of THE BAND! This “big” event was obviously to mark the official opening of Warmwell Airfield. The year was 1937 so I would have been about five years old. I recall feeling so excited as we had been told that THE BAND would be playing and marching up the road from the station. Together with my brother Michael and my sister Jill I waited for what seemed at least an hour but was probably only ten minutes for THE BAND to appear in the distance. We kept running into the road to see if we could see it. There was fortunately very little traffic on the roads in those days. At long last we could hear as well as see it coming. I remember being enthralled by the sight of the uniforms the shiny instruments and the band master looking so important. Another highlight was the Empire Day Air Display. (We still had an Empire in those days and were given a half day holiday from school. (LL)
