About the book >.>.> The Refractive Pool project began life in a Liverpool coffee shop when two local artists Brendan Lyons and Josie Jenkins set out a plan to document and celebrate the painters living and working in the city. A few years on and many caf? meetings and studio visits later that initial idea has taken the form of this book together with an online resource and an exhibition at The Walker Art Gallery in 2022. It was decided from an early stage that a book of the project should neither be a standard visual record of the artists and their work nor a direct catalogue of the exhibition but rather a stand-alone and unique creative event in itself. After an initial period of research it became clear that there was no dominant style or identifiable school of painting in the city and that the real strength of this community of artists was the diversity of artistic practices and individuals unified only by their use of the medium of paint and a common location. It became a goal of the project that the book would attempt to capture the flavour of this variety and to record a snapshot of Liverpool’s painters at this moment in its history revealing the faces and personalities behind the paintings they make. For the purposes of Refractive Pool a Liverpool artist was defined as someone who currently lives or works in the city and the immediate surrounding area. (LL)
