About the book >.>.> Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn born in 1606 in Leiden dominated Holland’s Golden Age of Painting. The exception to the rule in an age of specialization Rem- brandt produced historical works portraits scenes of everyday life still lifes and land- scapes. Though landscape was not Rembrandt’s main interest-primarily a figure painter he produced no more than eight landscape paintings-nevertheless his drawings and prints have endured as archetypes of the Dutch landscape. From the late 1620s to about 1660 he executed landscape drawings and prints in the hundreds. Today no less than in the seventeenth cen- tury Rembrandt’s drawings and prints set the highest standard for naturalistic land- scape. Both convey the look and feel of the Dutch countryside in a variety of ways rang- ing from cursory yet evocative sketches such as Six’s Bridge (1645) to complex highly fin- ished compositions such as View of Diemen (c. 1650-1653). Rembrandt found beauty in Holland’s humblest cottages as well as its majestic plains. The works in this volume re- veal his deep understanding of all the moods of the Dutch countryside. Published to accompany an exhibition at the National Gallery of Art Rembrandt’s Landscapes: Drawings and Prints comprises 97 works among them more than so draw ings and all 16 of Rembrandt’s landscape prints. It includes an introductory essay and comprehensive catalogue notes by Cynthia P Schneider an essay on topography and fatm buildings in Rembrandt’s drawings by Boudewijn Bakker. (MP)
