About the book >.>.> From 17th to 26th September 1944 the 1st British Airborne Division fought at Arnhem and Oosterbeek in the Netherlands in a battle destined to be regarded as one of the most harrowing engagements of the Second World War. One of the units involved in the struggle was the highly specialized Ist Airborne Reconnaissance Squadron. This book is an attempt to tell the story of the Battle of Arnhem through the activities and involvement of the officers and men of that unit. The research began from the simple beginnings of a personal enquiry into the circumstances surrounding the death of a friend who was probably amongst the first half-dozen British soldiers to be killed. The interest generated as a result of that then led to a more extended investigation into the part played by the entire Squadron. At an operational strength of not more than 250 all ranks the 1st Airborne Reconnaissance Squadron was only a small part of the total Divisional force. In no way was it comparable in size to any of the established parachute battalions but its unique contribution stemmed from the fact that its representatives saw action in almost all the main sectors into which the battle fragmented. This was due in part to accidental circumstances but in the main to the nature of the reconnaissance role itself. (LL)
