About the book >.>.> I started working in wood when I was about seven years old and have always been fascinated by the material its lovely grain great range of colours and the many things that can be made of it. I began by making very simple things such as boats then small boxes and tables; but as the years went by I became more ambitious. When I married and had a home of my own I made furniture out of scraps of wood and learnt how to French polish. I started to repair our better pieces of furniture most of which were antiques which had either been given to us or we had occasionally bought cheaply because they were in poor condition. Then I started to do the same thing for friends and my experience of repairing gradually grew. My training as an engineer was always a great elp. I read all the books on repairs both English and American that were available with the result that I was swamped with information frequently contradictory and had to decide after much trial and error. on the simplest methods of repair that would be both satisfactory and applicable to all pieces of furniture. It would be extremely confusing to have a multitude of different kinds of stains and polishes with dozens of colours and solvents and different processes some easy some difficult some safe and some dangerous and is it really necessary to have so many different and sometimes very complicated joints to fit pieces of wood together?
