About the book >.>.> This volume contains selected papers from the fifteenth-century history con- ference that I organised at Southampton on 3 – 5 September 1999. It was the ninth in the series of junior’ conferences launched by Charles Ross at Bristol in 1978. Southampton ’99 adopted the revised Huddersfield format of parallel sessions which enables a higher proportion of young scholars to contribute. Four plenary sessions featured papers by established scholars all published here and a further twenty-eight papers were delivered in parallel sessions mainly by current and recent research students. Despite generous subvention by the Royal Historical Society relatively few research students attended who were not speaking thus depriving delegates and absentees alike of the stimulus and camaraderie that such conferences are designed to afford. The quality of delivery was uniformly high. Reducing so many papers to a volume of reasonable length and balance required a drastic process of selection that cut out many papers of originality and worth. The final selection was made on the grounds of thematic coherence. I thank all those whose papers are not included for their contribution to the success of the conference and in due course I hope to see their work published elsewhere. (LL)
