About the book >.>.> The tame cock-chaffinch is now undoubtedly the husband of the white hen. And really one cannot wonder as she is the most exquisite creature and to him must seem fairer than a goddess. But it is harder on his former wife to whom for three seasons he has been faithful. However as an eternal triangle it seems amicable enough and she appears with the other two each morning for crumbs and although they pay her no attention she apparently bears no malice towards either. There was rain last night and now a melancholy lethargic day its colours purples greys dull greens with yellowish browns where the grass has not yet freshened. I walked up to the call-box by the shop to telephone and enquire about Mr Robertson. He had said Matron a cracked ankle bone and a temperature of 108? but he insisted on leaving for London this afternoon and Mr Pettigrew was going with him to see him home. Tonight after playing ‘Mrs Muggins’ in the Hut Hugo suddenly hugged me exclaiming ‘Oh I DO like my Mummy and Daddy I’m so glad they’re not Hostile Parents!’ He has spent a blissful day digging and damming the streams which the spring behind the Hut has driven across the grass and sand and into the gravel beach by the river. This ‘spring’ is in fact only a field drain but as it rises convincingly between stones it took us some time to discover this and we still happily drink its water when it is high enough to be scooped out with one of the Hut mugs.
