About the book >.>.> In January 1999 we made a New Year resolution to visit the ancient sites which were almost on our doorstep but which for years we had never really taken time to discover. Upon examining maps and books it soon became apparent that there was no one positive source which covered all the prehistoric monuments in the Peak District. There were a number of websites that came close yet even with today’s technological advances it is still almost impossible to take these out into the field. As a result we decided to compile our own definitive guide which seemed the perfect way of combining our disciplines of history geology and the environment. The aim of this book therefore is to provide a guide to all the prehistoric sites of note in and around the Peak District of Derbyshire with details of how to find them and a little bit of background as to their history and con- struction. We do not go into great archaeological detail about each site as there are many good books on this subject already and everyone has their own theories. However we have incorporated the five major types of ancient archaeological features to be found in the region – henges stone circles burial monuments prehistoric rock art and hillforts. A glossary of terms can be found at the back of the book. Being parents ourselves we have written this book with regard to family outings describing the quickest and easiest route to each monument. Many of the sites listed can of course be incorporated into longer walks for those uninhibited by young children or those with an enthusiasm for rambles. (LL)
