About the book >.>.> Roger Ballen’s Inside Out Centre for the Arts’ inaugural exhibition End of the Game grapples with the decimation of wildlife in Africa. It confronts the viewer with profound and universal questions about man’s interaction with the natural world. A collection of historical photographs artefacts and films engage with the origins of the African safari. In par- ticular this display explores the ‘Golden Age’ of hunting expeditions by colonialists and powerful Western figure- heads from 1860 onwards. It is this context that provides the basis for Ballen’s artistic response to the continent’s ongoing ecological plight. An extensive selection of the artist and founder’s work-including the mediums of pho- tography installation painting and drawing-probes the complex relationship between human and animal. Distinctively uncanny absurdist and surrealistic Ballen’s photographs and installations take the viewer on a journey into the deeper elusive recesses of the psyche. This process of internal psychological discovery-in which repressed or concealed material is brought to the fore- front of consciousness when looking at the artworks-is captured in the name of this institution “Inside Out Centre for the Arts”. End of the Game is thus a fitting choice for the Centre’s inaugural exhibition. Published in conjunction with this exhibition this cata- logue includes a comprehensive photographic survey of the show as well as three essays written by Amanda Ballen that reflect on the themes of this thought-provoking body of work.
