About the book >.>.> It was with this in mind that I convened an international workshop on ‘Women and Indian Religion’ under the auspices of the Centre for Cross-Cultural Research on Women at Queen Elizabeth House Oxford University in June 1987. The workshop was sponsored by the Economic and Social Research Council. A total of fifty-two invited participants gathered at the Cherwell Centre in Oxford for three days of intense dis-cussion. Specialists and practitioners in all the major religions of India both as they occur in the different regions within India and as they have flourished abroad the par-ticipants represented a total of thirteen countries over thirty major institutions and a variety of disciplines. The sixteen papers ranged from textual and historical studies to anthropological and sociological research. Eight of those relating to Hindu women in India are reproduced here. (My two chapters bring the total in this volume to ten.) The remaining papers from the workshop either have been published elsewhere or have been incorporated into larger works (e.g. Courtright forthcoming; Gross 1987; Harlan forthcoming; Jaini 1990; Joshi 1977; Knott 1987; Reynell 1987; Weinberger-Thomas 1989 and forthcoming.
