About the book >.>.> Two years ago Prof. Henk van Os urged the Groninger Museum to organise an exhibition focusing on the representation of the Russian landscape in the second half of the nineteenth century. Initially the Museum was hesitant about this proposal: the unexpected and overwhelming success of the exhibition Ilya Repin: Russia’s Secret had not yet occurred. In other words it was unpredictable as to how the public would react to Russian art that was scarcely known in the West. The anxiety about how to present nineteenth-century Russian landscape painting to other countries in Europe quickly turned to fascination and enthusiasm after we had personally viewed the great collections of paintings in the State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow and the State Russian Museum in St Petersburg. It was immediately apparent that the landscape in Russia in the nineteenth century was represented in a manner that was quite different to that prevalent in Western and Central European painting. Paintings by Aleksei Savrasov Ivan Shishkin Isaak Levitan Arkhip Kuindzhi and Mikhail Nesterov provide a view of Russia that surpasses the landscape: they reveal the Russian soul the nostalgia the longing. and the intimate entwining with the alternately severe grandiose and lyrical Russian landscape that has had such a profound influence on its inhabitants and their culture. It is an engagement that people in the West recognise most of all in Russian literature in the work of Turge nev Chekhov and Tolstoy for example and in Russian music from composers such as Glinka Tchaikovsky.
