About the book >.>.> Our objectives have been as varied as West Greenland British Guiana and Ungava Bay. In 1930 the choice was Northern Lapland which from the difficulties about transport and food proved a most arduous experience. Mr. Nicholas Polunin who had then completed his first year at Oxford proved the toughest member of the party and when he returned to Troms? he found his appetite for a rough life unsatisfied. So he managed to get a job as deck hand on a British timber boat and set off to the White Sea in the hope of visiting Russia. He found it no easy business to get ashore but he managed to see something of the little town of Soroka and that bleak seaboard and after a good deal of trouble he transhipped to a Swedish vessel and returned to Oxford by way of Antwerp just in time for the October term. Few under- graduates can have ever crowded so much adventure and hard living into a Long Vacation. The book is mainly a picture of life on a timber boat with vivid sketches of the various members of the crew for the writer has a genius for getting alongside every type of man. Good humour and good sense everywhere smoothed his way. (SP)
