About the book >.>.> In our twentieth year of producing an annual catalogue of Dutch and Flemish Old Master Paintings we are delighted to have been able once more to present a very good collection of paintings that are fresh to the market including a masterpiece by David Teniers the Younger depicting The Alchemist in his laboratory. Painting is alchemy. Like the alchemist the painter seeks to transform and be transformed by the medium. The artist’s pigments are made from fluids mixed together with powdered stone. The painter tries to discover life and form through the pull of the brush. The Alchermst on the other hand tries his whole life to forge gold from liquids and other metals. The life of an art dealer too is comparable of that of an alchemist. The art dealer’s perennial quest to uncover masterpieces or forgotten neglected paintings is highly comparable to that of the alchemist’s constant search for gold. The art dealer is like an art detective One formerly forgotten and and neglected work we have uncovered as an important painting by Pieter Pietersz which makes a nice addition to the oeuvre of the artist. Dating from around 1565 it Blustrates a Dutch saving that A Man shouldn’t do Woman’s work. We are delighted too to show lan Steen’s masterpiece once more after recent restoration. This restoration by Gwendolyn Boev?-Jones is described in this year’s catalogue The job of the restorer is vital for an art dealer. He or she can make or break a painting 1 am therefore very grateful to the following restorers; Lara van Wassenaer Gwendolyn Boev?-Jones and Pierre Bucat for the great jobs they have done for me this year Two other works by David Temers the Younger a winter scene by Aert van de Neer a fine Dutch interior by Bartholomeus van Bassen a head study from the atelier of Ruliens and the study of a boy by Thomas Willebouts amongst others make this catalogue another interesting addition to our annual production I am thankful to Wendela Wagenaar Burgermeister who wrote ten entites to fasper Hillegers who wrote elesen entries and to Natasha Broad who edited them.
