About the book >.>.> I began collecting pictures of Seaham several years ago with three intentions in mind -to bring together and preserve copies of the remaining often rapidly deteriorating old photographs of our town to gather as much information as possible on each one and to make them available to the people of Seaham. I very soon became aware of the intense interest in these pictures and hoped to produce a book. However whilst I had hundreds and soon thousands of photographs thanks to the generosity of Seaham folk in lending prints my limited historical knowledge did not allow me to write a history of the town. Through our mutual interest in Seaham I met Tom McNee. A fortunate encounter because I think Tom’s vast knowledge of local history acquired by much patient research has enabled him to produce a very readable history of Seaham an interesting blend of fact and anecdote. I am indebted to everyone who has contributed photographs and helped with their identification and dating especially Tom Cooper Brian Snowball and George Whitelock. Two pictures ‘Seaham Harbour Swimming Club in 1880’ and ‘Building the Inner Harbour in 1829’ from the collection at Sunderland Museum and Art Gallery are reproduced by permission of Tyne and Wear County Council Museums.
