About the book >.>.> Our main aim in this catalogue is to demonstrate the multifarious uses of bark and show the amazing number of barkcloth designs which have been produced in the last 250 years by artists both known and unknown. This can be achieved in the Exeter museum because since its foundation in the 1860s many examples of objects made of bark and barkcloth from many parts of the world have been acquired mostly by donation. Over 100 are illustrated in this catalogue. Most of these examples were acquired by their original collectors because they combined in an easily portable form the exotic and the familiar. The uses to which this kind of cloth have been put are easy to comprehend – costume matting house decoration containers. The designs are vibrant and immediately attractive yet redolent of the individuals and far-flung communities which produced them. The form of this catalogue follows in general the layout of the exhibition which it has been produced to accompany. The introductory sections describe the various uses to which bark has been put in different parts of the world.
