About the book >.>.> The purpose of this study initiated and sponsored by the Comit? Maritime Inter- national is to present the law relating to shipbuilding contracts in as wide a perspective as possible. The law in any particular case is found in the contractual terms chosen by the parties terms usually based on a standard form of shipbuilding contract superimposed on a substratum of national law. As regards terms that might be chosen by the parties this study concentrates on three standard forms of contract widely used in different parts of the world. As regards the substratum of national law this study contains a concise statement of relevant rules of law in France Italy Japan Norway Sweden the United Kingdom the United States Yugoslavia and West Germany. The rules in the United Kingdom are also found in Canada Ireland and Singapore except where a different rule is indicated. Reference to other jurisdictions in which shipbuilding occurs on a significant scale is omitted only because sufficient information was lacking. The law is stated as it is believed to stand on April 1 1981. I acknowledge with gratitude my debt to the members of the International Sub- Committee on Shipbuilding Contracts of the Comit? Maritime International on whose initial study I was able to draw to Professor G. Alpa Eva Clarke Mr G. Pannirselvam and to the President of the Comit? Maritime International Professor F. Berlingieri for his guidance and advice on the work as a whole also to my College which enabled me to undertake the work. (SP)
