About the book >.>.> So often an audience goes to a pantomime to see a well-starred Principal Boy and really enjoys most the juggling troupe in the Emperor of China’s ballroom which is hidden away in the programme amongst a horde of walkers-on. In a straight music-hall bill you may find that the top act is a radio singer or a musician who has no technique and little personality and then a couple of acrobats present an act packed full of dex- terity whilst the audience scuffles for its hats and coats ready to bolt out before “God Save the King”. When the leading lady of a musical comedy has reached the last stretch of her song and the chorus comes on to back her up in a dance it may sometimes occur to you to compare her steps with theirs and wonder how she would fare if she had to qualify for a place in the back row. Acts depending primarily on sheer physical skill still form the bulk of the programme in the circus though there is plenty of danger and sensation too but it is becoming harder to find them in the variety hills the touring revues and even the pantomimes. The incursion of radio acts real or alleged that rely on sound rather than sight has done a lot to give them out. It has also established the microphone as an almost invariable piece of stage equipment used even when the perform (SP)
