About the book >.>.> A few years ago Rupert Croft-Cooke went to live in Tangier. There he met a man called Paul Lund who was running a bar and whom all Tangier knew had a criminal record. They became friends and gradually Mr Croft-Cooke per- suaded him to tell his story. This is it. Paul Lund is a villain self-confessed. When the Governor of a certain prison asked him on his ‘reception’ what was his profession he replied “thief” and meant it. In telling his story he makes no excuses for himself and there are indeed none to be made. He is that comparative rarity a born criminal. It started at the age of eight when he broke open his mother’s money-box. It has continued with only brief intervals ever since. For Lund the law has always been something to be flouted circumvented and broken and life an exciting battle of wits between himself and the police. A native of Birmingham where his parents brought him up in a prosperous suburb it is the Birmingham City Police who have been his chief opponents but he has known the insides of many English gaols including Dartmoor as well as military “glass- houses” in India and Egypt and the prisons of Florence and the Canary Islands.
