About the book >.>.> In the ordering of the seasons there is a time for Exmoor’s retreat behind the barrier of blizzard. The moorland is resigned to knowing the four-letter word from Nature’s book for the permissive skies of every winter mutter it darkly. But there is quantity’s phenomenon as in 1962-63 when the snowbag seemed slit beyond repair. The Met. Office rated this snowfall over the West Country as the worst since the death-dealing blizzard of January 1881. Its volume on the 4500 miles of Somerset roads alone was estimated in mid- January 1963 as 30 million cubic yards and there was a lot more to come. Attempting to register the figure in the public mind Somerset County Council said it would take one of their stone quarries 250 years to produce 30 million cubic yards. And if scraped into one monumental heap the snow would create a mass somewhat bigger than the landmark of Brent Knoll. On Exmoor the smooth white sculptures of the whistling wind hard-bonded by the following frost stood for ‘the winter of the century’. A risky phrase! But one must hope that the remaining decades will charitably allow it to stand. (LL)
