About the book >.>.> It would not have been possible to write this book without the generous and expert assistance of others. I wish in particular to record my gratitude to the following: Lord Robertson of Oakridge son of the Field-Marshal who loaned me his father’s papers and talked to me freely about his father’s life character and career. At no time however have I felt under any irksome restriction as to the use of this material or the portrayal of the man I was writing about. Lord Robertson himself-more widely known as General Sir Brian Robertson -has of course had a notable career in the Army and so I was able to profit by his professional advice on a number of purely military problems as well. I am also grateful to him and to the respective publishers for permission to quote liberally from his father’s two books From Private to Field-Marshal (Constable 1921) and Soldiers and Statesmen 1914-1918 (Cassell 1926). Earl Haig and Mr Robert Blake the Haig Trustees for allowing me full access to the Haig Papers and to reproduce extracts from letters diary entries and other original material. I am also obliged to Mr Blake for historical advice and to him and the publisher for allowing me to make numerous quotations from his book The Private Papers of Douglas Haig 1914-1919 (Eyre & Spottiswoode 1952).
