About the book >.>.> I was born in 1947 just two years after the war. Sixty years on from my earliest memories I can reflect on the days of my Somerset childhood and marvel at the changes. Imagine how the youngsters of today would cope if we took away their mobile phones their MP3 players their PCs and that holy of holies ? their television! They’d be mortified but we knew no better. We had no electricity so no fridge nor freezer no washing machine no bathroom no hot water on tap no indoor toilet and no switch-on lights. But we were rich in other ways members of a closely-bonded community. We could ride our bikes on the main A39 and not worry about cars or lorries. Our food was fresh and locally-grown and bodily we were allowed nay even encouraged to catch every available ailment to ensure we built up our immunities. You’ve got to eat more than one peck of dirt before you die’ were my mother’s words of wisdom. And peanut allergies didn’t exist! We wore short grey trousers and lived in fear of the local bobby who could give us a smack around the back of the head in the full knowledge that if we told our parents we’d get another smack from them because we must have been doing something wrong.
