About the book >.>.> From the time of its earliest translation more than two centuries ago the Bhagavad Gita has exercised a powerful fascination upon the Chris-tian imagination inspiring missionaries poets and philosophers alike. Some have focused on the remarkable similarities between the Gita and the Gospels while others became intrigued by the new philosophical and symbolic universe opened up by the text. At one time similarities such as the belief in a personal God the manifestation of God in human form the importance of selfless action and the focus on loving devotion to God as means of salvation were thought to point to direct Christian influence on the text. In his German translation and commentary of 1869 Franz Lorinser supposes that the author of the Bhagavad Gita not only knew and frequently made use of the books of the New Testament but also “worked Christian ideas and views into his system.” This view was soon to be abandoned due to a lack of historical evidence and a general consensus on dating the text between the fifth and the third cen-tury BCE Christian missionaries and theologians then came to focus on the soteriological rather than the historical relationship between the two texts viewing the Gita as a preparation for the Gospel or as the expres-sion of a religious desire which was to be fulfilled in Christianity.
