About the book >.>.> A work such as this must draw heavily upon the experience of others. No one person can hope to be an expert in all the specialised subjects included in these pages. Their interdisciplinary character however has afforded me the pleasure of making vital excursions into some subjects with which I was hitherto quite unfamiliar. It was always my intention to use a ‘broad brush’ in compiling this guide but I have occasionally been lured into detail. Working in the South-West Peak for the past 18 years has given me an abiding interest and fascination with the relationships between the land and its people. I have discovered new ways of looking at this landscape and coming to an understanding of older technologies communication routes and industrial processes that were previously unfamiliar. Placing them into their wider social and historical perspective has been a reward- ing task. My hope is that this book will appeal to the general reader and also to those with an interest in local history. Whilst attempting to trace the origins of early routes across the landscape where sometimes much of great antiquity has survived the plough I realised that one must begin in the library rather than the field using aerial photographs travellers’ records place-names current archaeological evidence old maps and documents. Old maps will occasionally reveal clues to ancient routes but documentary evidence is not always available. Nev- ertheless a vital key to understanding is to go and look. Much information can be deduced from the physical evidence sometimes unavailable from other sources or which may previously have been misinterpreted. I am aware of gaps inevitable oversimplification and the many pitfalls hidden in evidence but I trust I have avoided major errors and succeeded in giving a reasonably clear outline of this history a considerable quan- tity of which I am also aware remains unearthed. I have used my own fieldwork and research and drawn freely on the latest reliable published and unpublished work of others. I sincerely hope adequate recognition of this has been given. I would like to express my gratitude to people living in the area for their comments and willingness to share local knowledge. (LL)
