About the book >.>.> In the North industrial growth began to overshadow agricultural endeavors attracting capital as well as thousands of immigrant workers who would soon become citizens. In the South there was little industrial development hence fewer settlers and the region continued to be almost solely dependent on a cotton-based agricultural economy. Cotton farming was very labor-intensive thus the “peculiar institution” of slavery remained a part of life on some Southern farms and plantations for years. It is interesting to note that the cotton gin the device that made cotton production economically viable-and thereby increased the need for large numbers of low-cost hand laborers-was invented by a Northerner Eli Whitney. Sectional hostilities increased markedly following the Missouri Compromise of 1820 which was intended to resolve the question of whether to allow or prohibit slavery in America’s resource-rich western territories. This territorial issue perhaps most clearly delineated the differences between the two factions. Although many Southerners believed that slavery was an anachronism in an enlightened society they feared that banning the practice in the West ultimately would undermine the South’s economy and weaken its representation in the U.S. Congress.
