About the book >.>.> The designation of both battalions of the Liverpool Scottish for home defence during the Second World War prompted many of the more adventurous members to volunteer ‘for special service of a hazardous nature’. This meant joining the Special Service units which were to become the Commandos the new airborne units and in some cases the Special Air Service the Special Boat Service and the Special Operations Executive. This book tells the story of the remarkable contribution made by members of the Liverpool Scottish territorial battalions to Special Forces operations between 1939 and 1945. The information on which this book is based is drawn from a wide variety of contemporary primary sources which include the War Diary of No.4 Independent Company and the diaries articles reports and written notes of Dougie Arnold Fred Birch Ted Douglas William Copland Noel Marples John Paterson and Don Randall. It also relies upon the later oral testimony of some of those who took part in the events of those far off days including: Bob Bragg Edward ‘Tiny’ Burke Bob Lowson Bill Page Tom Sherman and Gordon Sowerbutts. I would like to express my thanks to all of them and to those former members of the Liverpool Scottish with whom I talked or corresponded who took the time to share their experiences with me and allow these to be recorded in this book. I would also apologise to any of those who participated in those far off events. (SP)
