About the book >.>.> Northamptonshire has long been famous for its spires and its squires and the squires lived in houses which nearly all of them are interesting both as to their architecture and their owners. Some of the squires were so far actuated by public spirit as to found schools and almshouses or hospitals as they were generally called. Others adorned their surroundings by forming fine lay-outs to which point was given by some kind of architectural objects such as statues or sundials. The houses are many of them situated in parks which partly enshroud them from the public gaze. But there are plenty of villages where the old cottages mostly built of stone and simply designed on traditional lines present attractive views to anyone who likes to visit them. It is the purpose of the following pages to illustrate and briefly to give the history of these interesting objects. It was the 18th century otherwise the Georgian period which saw the rise of many of the squires’ homes and accordingly it is that period which provides the majority of the illustrations. But other houses are included of the earlier times of Eliza- beth and James and one or two that are some centuries older still. The inn at Fother- inghay was old when Mary Queen of Scots met her fate in the castle there. Higham Ferrers has several charming buildings of the time when the Gothic style was in full vigour and at Yardley Hastings are the remains of a manor house of the 14th century. (SP)
