About the book >.>.> The first came in the summer of 1969. To my surprise I was asked by Mgr Thomas Worden on behalf of Archbishop Beck to go to Manchester University when I had finished studies in Rome and had been ordained. It was to be my first appointment. Mgr Worden was the Dean of Studies at St Joseph’s College Upholland the senior seminary for the Archdiocese of Liverpool. However he assured me that a period of lecturing at the seminary was not what the Archbishop had in mind. That was a relief for I had never thought of myself as an academic. The appointment was for a more immediate purpose: Manchester University had at that time accepted the Licence in Theology of the Gregorian University as a first degree. Mgr Worden who had brokered that understanding wanted to consolidate it with a further post-graduate student. I was to be that student. I was free he said to pursue any line of post-graduate studies in the Faculty of Theology.
