About the book >.>.> The site which was excavated lies at an altitude of 20 m. just west of this tombolo. At the present time the tombolo provides an easy crossing for tractors and lorries to the island at practically all seasons; it is only for short periods during very high tides accompanied by north-westerly gales that it is covered over by the tides. The geomorphological history of the tombolo is not clear and one cannot be precise about access to the island at specific periods in the past. There is a large body of evidence supporting the view that sea level has been rising in Shetland at least over the past 7000 years; evidence comes not only from several archaeological sites which are now below high-water mark but also from the discovery of land-peat at the bottom of Lerwick Harbour. This drowning of the old sandy shorelines could account for the fact that no mesolithic sites have so far been discovered in Shetland of the coastal type found in north-east Scotland. The sand blowing up from the tombolo has covered over the archaeological remains on the eastern half of the island to a depth of 6 m. in places. The marks of former turf layers in the sand suggest that the build-up of sand on the island has been an intermittent process bu there is no evidence to suggest that the structures of any particular period were suddenly inundated by sand to such an extent that they had to be deserted. The pre-Christian horizons all lie on a clay soil formed from the underlying grey schists which are the bedrock of the island and there is very little sand in the profile until the immediate pre-Christian period; this suggests that as late as 2000 years ago the tombolo did not (MP)
