About the book >.>.> General Dwight D. Eisenhower asked me. to write this book October 10 1967. It is about heroes thousands of heroes. In Tom Brokaw’s words they are “The Greatest Generation.” It is about battlefields large and small where men died mangled or grotesquely wounded scared and many incapacitated for life. There are the survivors who bore horrific memories into domestic normalcy. The missing thousands now lie buried on the seabed went to oblivion in the explosion’s flash or are concealed in indiscernible graves. The invasion of Normandy was a supreme allied effort. Our generals were convinced that the way to kill the most Germans with minimum losses was to launch one great invasion with everything at their disposal. “Saving Private Ryan” and “The Longest Day” have given us a slice of the D-Day events in a few short hours of cinematography. Steven Spielberg’s realism gave the audiences an appreciation for honoring our Normandy veterans. He also showed us there were gruesome battles in the days following. The Normandy campaign was seventy-seven days of brutal fighting over an area the size of Connecticut by an allied army consisting principally of American British Canadian French and Polish troops. Ninety-six percent of their casualties occurred after D-Day between June 7 and August 21. Although strong mobile well-equipped German divisions stood prepared inland to counter the expected invasion numerous static coastal defenses were manned by “volunteers” from Russia Mongolia China and Korea commanded by German non-coms who would readily shoot a “volunteer” whom lacked fighting zeal.
