About the book >.>.> Many of the various roles and contributions of slave women to plantation life have been swept under the rug of history. While slave men have long been acknowledged as skilled carpenters brick masons iron makers furniture makers wood-carvers and potters women have been seen primarily in the role of the plantation “mammy” figure. This limited view of slave women has made them the victim of three isms: racism sexism and regionalism. In particular the contribution of slave women to textile production and other craft processes has been ignored. Yet the evidence that slave women produced fabric and that they quilted sewed and crocheted is irrefutable. A significant number of slave-made quilts is now preserved in fifteen states and England. As for other textiles many woven coverlets counterpanes rag rugs bed rugs and crocheted artifacts attributed to the handiwork of slave women have been located. Even today a slave-made quilting frame in Arlington Virginia is still being used daily by a handful of elderly African-American women at a senior citizens center. At their daily meeting these women quilt talk laugh and gossip-a few have even been known to smoke a pipe! To date no formal study has been undertaken to determine the extent of the involvement of slave women in the design or craftsmanship of mid- nineteenth-century quilts to determine the influence of African culture on African-American quilting styles. Thus for too long have slave women been denied recognition or acknowledgment or even a history (LL)
