About the book >.>.> The Hammer Museum is pleased to be organizing the first US exhibition in two decades of the drawings of the nineteenth-century French poet novelist playwright and critic Victor Hugo. One of the greatest writers of all time Hugo was also an accomplished draftsman and produced a lesser-known but remarkable body of works on paper. His drawing practice was largely a private endeavor and although more than three thousand sheets by him survive today they were rarely seen in public during his lifetime. The sole American museum exhibition devoted to his graphic work to date was organized by the Drawing Center in New York in 1998 when I was director there and I am thrilled the the Hammer is introducing Hugo’s experimental and enigmatic practice to a new generation in the United States. Stones to Stains: The Drawings of Victor Hugo beautifully con- ceived and curated by Cynthia Burlingham and Allegra Pesenti includes a major selec- tion of drawings and photographs that were not seen in New York and are thus being presented to American audiences for the first time. The Hammer has long been commit- ted to showing a wide spectrum of historical and contemporary works on paper through exhibitions such as Tea and Morphine: Women in Paris 1880-1914 Rachel Whiteread Drawings and Zarina: Paper Like Skin and through the acquisition of works on paper by the Grunwald Center for the Graphic Arts and the Hammer Contemporary Collection. We are pleased to add the remarkable drawings of Victor Hugo to this list. (MP)
